The Power of Writing for Wellbeing

If you’ve been following me for awhile, especially on Instagram, you’ll notice that I’ve been doing this whole writing thing for a long time. I recently celebrated EIGHT YEARS of this wonderful website I call chiaragoesglobal! Plus, we are celebrating ONE YEAR of my book Blooming this month too! When I first started my writing journey, I had no idea how beneficial it would be for my overall wellbeing and mental health. Today’s blog is going to fully dive in to this topic: exploring the power of writing for wellbeing.

Over the years, I’ve realized more and more just how impactful the art of writing has been on my wellbeing. chiaragoesglobal was born out of the desire to practice writing creatively, and wanting to share stories about my travels. It may have initially started as a travel blog, but it evolved so much over time. At the beginning, it was just something I did when I had time, or when I felt inspired. But as that time progressed, I began to realize a few things about my own writing practice and the impact it was having on me. I wanted to keep writing to express myself, yet I started coming across road blocks.

There were many times when I didn’t want to sit down and write, so I’d avoid it. Eventually, I realized I was avoiding the writing because I was avoiding something within myself. Typically it was in relation to something I didn’t want to deal with just yet. But I found that forcing myself to write was so good, because it brought all of these emotions that I would try to avoid to the surface – in a way that they could no longer be avoided. Writing became my truest form of expression, and in order for me to write cohesively and clearly and well, it required honesty. I could only do that by being honest with myself.

Soon, writing became a way to actually process my emotions. Recognizing this and how much of an impact it was having on me, I realized how helpful it actually was for me to write. Slowly, I became less afraid of facing what I had initially been avoiding through writing. I began to write more frequently. The more I wrote, the easier it became for me to address what I had been avoiding in the past. I eventually became aware of the fact that I had to write, as a way to cope with everything that came up. It became its own routine, its own kind of wellness practice.

I embraced this newfound wellness practice as much as I could. Embracing it rather than resisting it helped the flow of writing and helped my own mental wellbeing. Developing a more consistent practice of writing as a way to manage my wellbeing became important, and was something I struggled with for a while. Recognizing the positive impact it was having was a big driving force for me to schedule time for writing into my life regularly. Eventually, I came to the consistent schedule that we currently have, where I’m sharing a new blog post every two weeks. This consistency has been super helpful for me in carving out time to write, and time to face everything I’m dealing with in life. Maintaining this schedule has been a big win both creatively and for my wellbeing.

Last year, I also wrote and published a poetry book, that is now one year old. That in and of itself was a healing process. Each step along the way allowed me to embrace parts of myself, cope with my mental health, and share it all with others. A big part of the reason why I have continued to share my writing is so others know they aren’t alone – especially when it comes to mental health challenges. Sharing has now become a part of the writing process for me and its something I’m going to continue to do as I move forward with life. I am so grateful for the massive impact writing has had on my wellbeing, and sharing my work is a big part of that.

My hope for all of you reading this is that you can find ways to embrace writing for your own wellbeing too. It has had the biggest impact on my life, in ways I never could have predicted. I will never stop writing because it is such a useful tool for me to balance my wellbeing. I strongly encourage you to find a way that works for you. Whether its poetry, blogs, longer writing, shorter writing, make believe or non-fiction, journaling, etc – any way that helps you process your emotions is a good thing!! I believe this is true with any form of creativity too, but writing works especially well for me. I encourage you to test out different options and see what form of creativity helps your wellbeing the most.

However you choose to embrace writing for your wellbeing, I hope you find it helpful. It has truly changed my life and specifically my wellbeing for the better. Let me know which form of creativity works best for you in the comments! Enjoy your journey of writing for wellbeing! ❤
